FIVE REASONS TO VISIT GATLINBURG SKYPARK

Perched atop the stunning landscape of the Great Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg SkyPark is an iconic attraction that beckons adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. Offering a thrilling blend of outdoor experiences and awe-inspiring vistas, this mountaintop destination promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Smokies. We've compiled a list of some of the top reasons you should consider a visit to Gatlinburg SkyPark on your next Smoky Mountain getaway. But first, let's dive into the history of the park.

A BIT OF HISTORY

In the winter of 1953, local Gatlinburg innkeeper Rel Maples contacted ski enthusiast and chairlift entrepreneur Everett Kircher after reading about Kircher's fascination (and success) with the design and construction of chairlifts in the midwest.  Maples approached Kircher with a request that was simple in theory, yet incredibly complex from a logistical standpoint: build a chairlift on the mountain behind his property. After a brainstorming meeting at the proposed site, Mr. Maples generously leased the land to Kircher, marking the beginning of Gatlinburg's sightseeing history. Gatlinburg SkyPark swiftly evolved into one of the town's most beloved attractions, seamlessly weaving itself into the vibrant fabric of this special Smoky Mountain community.

For countless visitors, the SkyPark is a quintessential part of their annual Gatlinburg adventures. For others, it might be an attraction long seen yet not experienced. Whether you're a SkyPark loyalist or a newbie, here are five reasons why you should take a ride up the SkyLift's iconic yellow chairs next time you're in town:

UNPARALLELED VIEWS

Take in SkyPark's breathtaking Smoky Mountain backdrop, complete with Mt. LeConte perfectly framed up front and center. Views extend from Great Smoky Mountains National Park on one end to Sevierville on the other. You can also catch a mesmerizing birds-eye view of downtown Gatlinburg, which is especially beautiful as its lights begin to glitter after sundown.

This 680-foot-long wonder is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America. At its highest point it's just over 140 feet off the ground, and in the very center of the bridge guests encounter a section with a glass bottom, offering them the illusion of walking on air.

Explore the Gatlinburg SkyTrail, a scenic pathway seamlessly linking the SkyBridge ends for a relaxed mountain hike with stunning views. Spanning one-third of a mile, it caters to all ages, including pets, with three distinct sections to enjoy. The Trail is open for day and nighttime use, except for the Tulip Tower, which is only open during daytime hours.

The SkyDeck amphitheater offers unparalleled views of the Great Smoky Mountains and downtown Gatlinburg. Day or night, relax in outdoor seating, enjoy the tiered waterfall, fire pit, and the SkyCenter building. Take photos against Gatlinburg's stunning backdrop, and savor snacks or craft beer with breathtaking views.

Don't miss the chance to visit the SkyCenter and capture a souvenir photo, a cherished tradition dating back to the early 1950s. The first floor also houses the SkyCafe and a gift shop, while the second floor features an expansive seating area and a bar with unparalleled views of Gatlinburg. The SkyCenter offers amazing views, both day and night.
